Your Insurance Claim Was Denied. Now What?

The letter sits on your kitchen counter. "Claim Denied." Your roof is damaged. You have photos. You paid your premiums on time. And yet—denied.
Take a breath. A denial is not the end. Insurance companies know that most people give up after a denial. That's exactly why you shouldn't.
Why Insurance Claims Get Denied
Common denial reasons include:
- Pre-existing damage: They claim the damage existed before the covered event
- Insufficient documentation: They say you didn't prove the damage
- Policy exclusions: They cite an exclusion in your policy
- Maintenance issues: They attribute damage to lack of maintenance
- Filing deadline: They claim you filed too late
Immediate Actions After Denial
- Request the denial in writing with specific policy language cited
- Request your complete claim file (you have a right to this)
- Review your policy and the cited exclusions carefully
- Document your response timeline (appeals have deadlines too)
Building Your Appeal
Your appeal should include:
- A formal appeal letter addressing each denial reason
- Additional documentation or evidence
- Independent inspection reports
- Weather data proving the covered event
- Maintenance records showing proper upkeep
External Options
If your internal appeal fails, you have external options:
- State Insurance Department: File a complaint (free)
- Appraisal clause: Most policies allow for binding appraisal
- Mediation: Some states offer free mediation
- Insurance attorney: For bad faith cases or large claims
Remember: denials get overturned every day. Don't accept "no" as the final answer.
